Occupy Norfolk hosts Occupy Virginia in protest of Senate Bill 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2012
Commercial Plaza, a.k.a. Camp Mildred
Senate Bill 1867 has recently been referred to as an assault on the Bill of Rights. At the very least it is an incredibly contentious product of Congress that due to purposefully vague language, could allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens and legal residents of the United States. Occupy Norfolk has invited all of Virginia to stand with them in Solidarity on Dec 14th 2011 action against The National Defense Act (Bill S.1867).
Who – Occupy Norfolk is hosting Occupy Virginia – a group made up of Occupy protesters from Richmond, Charlottesville, NoVA, Roanoke, Blacksburg, Martinsville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Fredericksburg, Floyd, Virginia Tech, Front Royal, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Portsmouth.
What – Occupy Virginia is participating in a National Day of Action in response to Senate Bill 1867. These actions will include a Rally (12p.m.), March (2p.m.) and a Senator Speakout (3p.m.) at Senator Warner’s office in Downtown Norfolk.
Where – beginning at Commercial Plaza, Commercial Place & Main Street.
When – December 14, 2011 (#D14)
Occupy Norfolk is now 69 days old. We stand in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement and find inspiration in the Arab Spring that started in Tunisia nearly one year ago. We assemble peacably at Commercial Plaza for 34 days before we were evicted by the City of Norfolk. Our General Assembly meetings are every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 7pm at MacArthur Square Park (rain location: Waterside Food Court).
Our mission statement:
OCCUPY NORFOLK in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street Movement and occupations across the globe is a non-violent, non-partisan assembly that uses peaceful protest and direct action to bring about substantive systemic change. We resolve to remove the disproportionate influence of corporations and moneyed interests from the democratic process.
Thank you.
